Possibly Armed Man Causes Neighborhood Lockdown in Egg Harbor Twp., NJ
Authorities in Egg Harbor Township have locked down a neighborhood as they continue to try to reach a man who they believe has mental health issues and may be armed.
The situation unfolded around 4:00 early Thursday morning in the area of Tremont and Bates Avenues.
Police were initially called to the scene about a disturbance, however, a caller then reported that a man had a firearm and he may have discharged a round from that weapon -- however, that information has not been confirmed or corroborated at this time.
Officials say contact was made with the man but he stopped communicating with officers.
The Atlantic County SWAT Team is out with officers from the Egg Harbor Township Police Department as they try to end the situation peacefully.
Police say there is no known threat to the public but the area is being locked down out of an abundance of caution. The public is being asked to avoid the area until further notice.
This is a developing situation that will be updated as more information becomes available.
