Pleasantville Man Admits Trying to Slash Girlfriend on AC Boardwalk
Mays Landing, N.J. — A Pleasantville man has pleaded guilty to pulling out a box cutter and attempting to slash his girlfriend on the Atlantic City Boardwalk during a domestic dispute late last year.
On Thursday, 48-year-old John A. Coles entered his plea to a charge of third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. An agreement calls for a recommended three-year state prison sentence.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said on December 18th, 2025, Atlantic City Police responded to the Boardwalk for a domestic incident. The victim told officers that a verbal argument with Coles had turned physical; he struck her, grabbed her, and covered her mouth with his hand. When she broke free and grabbed a nearby screwdriver to defend herself, Coles pulled out a box cutter and attempted to slash her. He missed.
During his plea, Coles admitted to wielding the box cutter and attempting to use it to injure the victim.
Sentencing is scheduled for October 10th.
