Rielly’s OT Winner Downs Flyers
For most of the night, the Flyers were the better team against a much more talented Toronto Maple Leafs team. But when the game reached overtime, one opportunity is really all Toronto needed to escape with two points.
Morgan Rielly scored at 2:25 of overtime to give the Leafs the victory, 3-2, over the Flyers on Sunday night.
The Flyers got on the board first at 3:24. For the second straight game, Tyson Foerster opened the scoring, beating Dennis Hildeby off a rush to make it 1-0 with his 12th of the season.
The lead was short-lived, as the Maple Leafs got the tying goal just 38 seconds later. Matthew Knies finished off a rebound for his 15th goal of the season at 4:02.
Late in the period, the Leafs took the lead. A big rebound was left in the slot and Oliver Ekman-Larsson was able to poke it home to make it 2-1 with his second goal of the season.
Through 20 minutes, shots were 14-13 Flyers.
Midway through the second, the Flyers got the game tied shortly after a power play. Scott Laughton finished off a centering pass from Sean Couturier for his ninth of the season to make it a 2-2 game.
Through two periods, shots were 23-17 Flyers.
Shots were at a premium for most of the third, as the two teams played a tight defensive period to send things to over.
At 2:25 of overtime, the Leafs converted on a two-on-one for the win. Auston Matthews set up Rielly for the game-winning goal, his fifth of the season.
Ivan Fedotov made 22 saves on 25 shots in the loss. Hildeby made 30 saves on 32 shots in the win.
Rasmus Ristolainen had two assists for the Flyers. Matthews had two assists for Toronto.
These two teams meet again as the Flyers return home on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
