The Philadelphia Phillies selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Tyler Phillips from triple-A Lehigh Valley ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Atlanta Braves.

Philadelphia optioned reliever Yunior Marte as the corresponding move and to make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Phillips provides depth to the Phillies’ bullpen, he had been a starter at Lehigh, making 15 starts this season, going 7-3 with a 4.89 ERA (50 ER, 92.0 IP) and 78 strikeouts.

The Lumberton native went to Bishop Eustace High School and was a 16th round draft pick in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers. Phillips was claimed off waivers by the Phillies on July 24, 2021, and attended major league spring training as a non-roster invitee this year.

Marte pitched in two games against the Cubs this week and owns a 3.31 ERA in 16.1 innings over 15 appearances.

The Phillies open a three-game series tonight in Atlanta against the Braves with Aaron Nola getting the ball in Game 1, Ranger Suarez on Saturday in Game 2, and Michael Mercado on Sunday in Game 3.
