Longtime Sixers PA Announcer Matt Cord Announces Retirement
The Philadelphia Sixers will have a new voice at the Xfinity Mobile Arena next season.
The End of an Era for Philadelphia’s PA Booth
After 28 seasons, Matt Cord, the longtime public address announcer for the Sixers, has announced in a social media post that this season will be his last.
From Allen Iverson to Joel Embiid: A Legendary Run
Cord has been the voice of the Sixers through the ups and downs. He introduced us to a six-foot guard, from Georgetown, No. 3, Allen Iverson! After a one-year absence, the team replaced Cord with veteran Philadelphia broadcaster Tom Lamaine, and after one season, removed him from that role.
Matt Cord’s Return to the Microphone in 2012
After that one season, the Sixers had an open tryout to replace Lamaine, a role I actually tried out for. After multiple rounds, I was informed I had made it to the final five candidates, but the team elected to go with Cord!
This was from the Crossing Broad article back in 2012 about Cord getting his gig back.
Some of our radio friends, 97.3 ESPN’s Mike Gill and WIP’s Brian Startare, auditioned, and I think either would have done a fine job.
With good reason. He was outstanding in that role and has remained one of the great things about going to a Sixers game.
Joel "The Process" Embiid, Ty-Rese-Maxe-EEEEEE, and many other great calls.
Cord is the midday host on Philadelphia's WMMR radio and will continue to serve in that role.
