Cash, Cards, Apps? Wawa’s New Gas System Is a Head-Scratcher

If you are gassing up this week at your local Wawa, let me know if you notice anything different in the payment system.

I have seen several online posts about a change in the pay-at-the-pump system at Wawa that mandates selecting the amount of gas you want and paying for it in advance.

In each of these social media posts, this topic has generated contradictory comments, with some people saying they have had this happen to them at Wawa this week, and others saying this system was already in effect or only happens at certain Jersey Wawa locations.

Here's a sampling of the posts about this change in the payment system at Wawa in New Jersey.

From Reddit, June 2, 2025: Wawa has moved to a prepay model for gas with cash now. If you want to fill up your tank and paying with cash you will have to specify an amount, give the attendant the cash, and if you reach full before your cash limit you'll get change back. According to what I'm hearing it's a total shitshow. If you need a fast fill up and you're using cash I'd consider somewhere other than Wawa.

From Facebook, June 2, 2025: WAWA NEW PAYMENT SYSTEM for the gas station part of wawa in Butler, NJ

All cash transactions for gas are pre paid only, set amounts and filling. Any set amount like $20 for example, is also pre paid only.
You will still be able to do fill card payments at the pump. And set amounts with card and fill card amounts from the wawa app— at Wawa.

From Facebook's Cape May Live Page,June 1, 2025: Wawa has upgraded their computer systems for the gas pumps, requiring payment before fueling commences, effective today as of 12:01 am.

Payment before fueling is now required. If you are purchasing a flat amount (e.g. $50), the fuel attendant must take your card and enter the amount on a PIN pad in the fuel kiosk.
From TikTok, June 2, 2025: In a video, a woman says, "This is for my people in NJ, NY, and PA. I use my App to get gas at Wawa. As of today, if you use the App to buy gas, the very next screen at the top (of the App) gives you the option to choose the amount of gas, so you have to do that going forward."

Finally, from AI, there is this information.

Wawa has recently changed its gas payment system, requiring payment before fueling starts, including for both cash and app users. This change is effective as of June 2, 2025, at 12:01 AM.

But, you know how AI just kind of makes stuff up based on what it finds online, so I don't know if I can trust it.

Boy, the world has gotten complicated.

What's the Deal With Wawa Gas payments?

I can understand Wawa making you select an amount of gas and paying in advance if you are paying cash, so you won't run off without paying after getting gas.

There is no official word from Wawa about this policy change online. So, I am turning to you to give me insight.

Inquiring minds want to know.
